Liberals Hold a Wide Lead but Conservatives are Up

August 1999 – The latest FOCUS CANADA survey found Jean Chrétien’s Liberals holding their lead over other parties, with the support of 48 percent of decided voters; this proportion was essentially unchanged from March 1998.

Support for Joe Clark’s Conservatives had increased, to 16 percent, slightly ahead of the Reform Party and the New Democrats (both 12%).

In Quebec, the federal Liberals (47%, up eight points) moved ahead of the Bloc Québécois (38%, down ten points).

The above results of Environics’ most recent FOCUS CANADA survey are based on a survey conducted among a national sample of 2,018 adult Canadians, including 1,931 eligible voters. The survey was conducted between July 2 and August 2, 1999. The margin of error for a sample of this size is approximately two percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

The question wording was as follows:
